It was an epic moment for the 15-year-old Juan Garcia, suffering from cancer when his favourite soccer player, Eric Abidal, visited him in the hospital and gifted him a Rolex watch. The youngster broke down in tears when he met his idol of years, and that prompted the 32-year-old France international star to present him with his precious possession.

The Barcelona defender also suffered from a cancerous tumor in his liver last year and recovered from it successfully. The extraordinary gesture by him surprised the young cancer sufferer showing his warm hearted nature to all present. After the young boy spent five months of operation, radiation and chemotherapy for his treatment that ended on January 5, some team players visited him at the hospital.  During the visit, Abidal spoke for long with the youngster and other children on the ward. Immediately, he took the Rolex Daytona watch from his wrist and presented it to the boy, refusing all attempts to make him take it back by the father.

The astonished father of the young boy said, “The only thing I was able to tell my son was, “You have in your head the same thing Abidal had in his liver, and tomorrow they will take it out.” My son said, “Dad get me the shirt of Abidal; I will fight like him and will win my own champions league.”

Praising the gesture by the soccer star, J Garcia added, “He was affectionate, tender and friendly, and for ten minutes, he never let my son out of his arms. We were all so emotional and grateful.” The football sensation bonded great time with the father-son duo. He told J. Garcia, “It doesn’t matter what this is worth. I want your son to be happy.” His visit to the sick children at the hospital brought them bundles of joy and happiness.

J. Garcia Serra, Garcia’s father, told the story in an open letter to Catalan newspaper Herald, explaining how Abidal’s fight against cancer had inspired his own son’s fight against the disease.

Though a few attempts were being made to find out the origin of the watch through contacts at Barcelona and the French Football Federation, the normal cost of the watch is being estimated at $30,000.
Though Eric Abidal is now no longer a first choice for the Barcelona team selection as he used to be, and he almost appeared to leave the club recently, he signed a new contract that runs until June 2013 to everyone’s surprise.
